Design Proposal

Conveyor Cabins is an accomodation project that sleeps 24 guests and bears an indoor and outdoor gathering space for parties or seminars of up to 60 people. The project ensures re-use of the Conveyor Belt structure as a centre piece / food production space. It also ensures the utilization of the existing forests as accessories to the outdoor showering experience within the cabins. The project ensures majority use of native renewable raw materials like Cypress Pine annd follows a modular construction method to allow for easy assembly/disassembly incase of future re-purposing. The project also ensures repurposing of steel & steel walkways for the ramps and access.

Overall the project provides guests with a very rustic less than comfortable living experience that allows closer engangement with nature while simultaneously repurposing the Conveyor Belt Structure and existing forests.

Context

In 2011, the Triabunna Mill—once the largest woodchip mill in the southern hemisphere and a key component of Tasmania’s logging industry—was put up for sale. Environmental advocates and entrepreneurs Graeme Wood and Jan Cameron collaborated to purchase the site, viewing it as a pivotal chance to bring an end to the woodchip trade in the region. Following the acquisition, the mill’s infrastructure was discreetly dismantled to prevent the government from reclaiming the property for the purpose of reviving logging operations.

Site Information

The site is located at 555 Freestone Point Road, Triabunna, Tasmania 7190, on the east coast of lutruwita/Tasmania. Set on 43 hectares of waterfront land, the site offers expansive views over Spring Bay and across to Maria Island. It is approximately a 6-minute drive from the town center of Triabunna.

Brief

The client wants a versatile retreat space at the conveyor belt site, to host up to 24 guests for corporate getaways, eco-tours to Maria Island, and intimate weddings. The design must include indoor and outdoor gathering areas, comfortable sleeping quarters, and full bathing facilities. The client aslo wants a flexible, sustainable solution that revives the site’s old conveyor belt infrastructure.
